Location: Virtual

This is a two-day course that will take place virtually from 1 pm - 5 pm on 8/3, and then 8:30 am-12:30 pm on 8/4 with breaks provided throughout.

Following the recent flooding in Vermont, AIAVT is offering a Safety Assessment Program training at a discount from the usual rate. Completion of this course will qualify attendees to consistently and safely assess structures for habitability in the aftermath of a natural disaster, and allow you to volunteer with state agencies to aid in disaster recovery. The course will be taught by Kenneth J. Filarski, FAIA.

The program is managed by Cal OES with cooperation from professional organizations, including AIA. It utilizes volunteers and mutual aid resources to provide professional engineers, architects and certified building inspectors to assist local governments in safety evaluation of their built environment in an aftermath of a disaster.

SAP is the training standard of the AIA Disaster Assistance Program, which provides leadership, advocacy, and training to architects who are interested in volunteering their professional skills in times of crisis. This workshop will teach participants to conduct rapid damage assessments of structures affected by earthquakes, wind, and water.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to consistently and safely assess structures for habitability and will receive a nationally recognized Cal OES registration ID card from the state of California.

Certification process: After successfully completing AIA’s SAP training, eligible individuals will be sent an exam from Cal OES and need to be able to demonstrate proficiency with the information learned during the course in order to receive their California-issued registration ID card. This nationally recognized certification is often required training for volunteer building safety evaluators nationwide. After course completion, AIA members will see credits recorded in their on-line profile. Only non-AIA members will receive certificates.

Please note that Vermont does not currently have a Good Samaritan law in place, so any volunteer activity may carry liability risks. This topic will be covered during the training.

This training is open to AIAVT members, as well as engineers and architects from surrounding states. Attendance is limited to 35, so please sign up early!
