Fairbanks Museum Mass Timber Building Tour
Date: 6/26/24 3:30 PM
Location: St. Johnsbury, VT
Please join the Vermont Green Building Network (VGBN), AIAVT and Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund for a tour of the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium's Tang Science Annex, the first mass timber demonstration project in Vermont and the first building to use cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels made from locally sourced Eastern Hemlock. Come learn how the design team and stakeholders were able to make it all happen and observe the inviting results of their hard work. Hear from the architects, mass timber experts, and local forestry specialists regarding unique challenges and opportunities presented by adding onto a 100 + year old historic building. After the tour, we will gather nearby at the Kingdom Taproom for a more in-depth Q+A with the speakers and tour leaders as well as a networking reception featuring a light dinner and cash bar.
During this event, attendees will learn more about:
- The overall project design, unique challenges and opportunities presented by adding onto a 100+ year old historic building, design choices, why CLT, etc.
- The technical considerations for using CLT in this project; benefits of mass timber in a structure of this nature; engineering and other technical aspects of interest
- The story behind the wood used in this project; where it came from, how it got certified for use in CLT panels and any unique attributes of Easter Hemlock
