Flood Resilience and Landscape Architecture Site Tour
Date: 8/22/24 9:00 AM
Location: Northfield, VT
The Vermont Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), we would like to extend an invitation to tour one of the state's remarkable success stories: Dog River Park in Northfield on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. - 10 a.m.
Conceived in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, with the demolition of multiple homes on Water Street, the Dog River Park is a unique park designed to use ecological systems to mitigate the impact of future flood events while acting as a recreational and educational resource for the Town. It contains ecological habitat in an urban park, including opportunities for low-impact recreation and community events. The goal of the park’s design is to restore the river corridor, which means reconstructing and protecting the river’s natural floodplain. Protecting the floodplain also means protecting the properties and infrastructure in the neighborhoods along the river, as well as the water quality of larger bodies of water such as Lake Champlain.
A site tour will provide a firsthand experience on the cutting-edge approaches landscape architects employ to design sustainable landscapes, and how vital federal and state investments are to ensure that communities reap the benefits of these extraordinary places.
In addition to Dog River Park, this tour will highlight other projects in Northfield worked on by landscape architects, including pedestrian connections between the Park and the Town Common, Town Forest access and wayfinding, and community building efforts. The tour will meet and begin at the Town Common.
This site tour is an informal opportunity for you to see how landscape architects influence multiple aspects of the natural and built environment. The site tour will also include an open discussion about the landscape architecture profession, its benefits, and its contributions to our community. We expect the entire tour to take approximately one hour. Coffee and pastries will be provided. Parking is available at the Town Common, Depot Square, Northfield VT.
