Norwich University’s School of Architecture + Art is pleased to welcome John Hathorn, Artist and Professor Emeritus at The University of Louisiana, for the third lecture of the series FOCUS: BEING PRESENT IN… (making, communicating, seeing, doing…).

About John Hathorn:
Hathorn is a native of Oxford, Mississippi, and received BA and M.Ed degrees from the University of Mississippi and an MFA from Florida State University. He is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he taught painting and drawing for 37 years. He has been twice recognized by the University with Eminent Faculty Awards, as Distinguished Professor in 2008 and with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013.
For nearly four decades as a painter and constructivist, Hathorn’s work underscores a long-standing interest in literature and in particular relations between painting and poetry. Chronologically and stylistically diverse sources in art and architectural history have served as important catalysts in Hathorn’s art informed by over three decades that he has periodically taught in England, France, and Italy. His work is often thematically categorized by series titles including Migratory Poems, Correspondences, The Baudelaire Sketches, On Rilke, and Poems to Copernicus among others. He describes diverse and interdisciplinary explorations in his work including felt experiences, linguistics, botany, ornithology, and connection to the southern landscape. His lecture will address relational correspondences between painting, architecture, poetry and other literary sources that have informed his artistic practice for over three decades.
He is the recipient of grants through the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and was selected as a Visual Arts Fellow through the Louisiana Division of the Arts.
His work has been exhibited in fifteen solo gallery and museum shows, and numerous group shows including at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Contemporary Art Center and the Ogden Museum in New Orleans. He is represented by the Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas and the New Gallery in Houston, Texas. In 2013 the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, Louisiana, hosted a thirty-year retrospective of the artist’s work.
A generous grant from the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, a philanthropic organization supporting cancer research, education, volunteerism and other charitable endeavors, backs the School of Architecture + Art Lecture Series. For more than 10 years, the Byrne Foundation and Norwich University have partnered to bring eminent national and international architects, designers, artists and writers to campus. Events are free and open to the public.
Norwich University’s School of Architecture + Art is the only National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-accredited architecture school in Vermont and one of only two in northern New England.
