Thomas Barrie’s film explores spirituality in architecture and brings a fresh
perspective to how we think about design with his latest film. This
documentary dives into the connections between architecture, ethics, and
spirituality, raising essential questions about the role of design in shaping a
better world.
The film features experts from different fields discussing how spiritual
perspectives can influence architecture to create more meaningful, sustainable, and ethical spaces. David E.
Leatherbarrow, Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, describes it as: “Composed of
equal measures of awareness, insight, and imagination, the thought expressed in these conversations will guide
viewers to make the right choice between possible realities and real possibilities for a better world.”
Thomas Barrie, a Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University, has spent his career studying
architecture's cultural and symbolic significance. He has written extensively, including his book House and Home:
Cultural Contexts, Ontological Roles (Routledge, 2017). This film serves as a call to action for architects, students,
and educators to think beyond aesthetics and functionality and consider deeper ethical and environmental
responsibilities in design. ACSF hopes this project will inspire future architects to integrate spirituality and
sustainability into their work.
