Meet the 2022 AIA Vermont Design Awards Jury
Melissa McCoy is a Principal Architect at CKJT Architects, a firm that has served the Mid-Columbia Basin region for over 65 years. A native of the Pacific Northwest and graduate of the University of Idaho, her work is primarily comprised of commercial projects for public and private clients. She has experience with numerous project types, including complex remodels. She is interested in innovative design solutions supported by solid architectural principles. She is skilled in developing efficient and creative solutions to design challenges that meet each project’s unique goals and needs.
Erik Becker is principal of EB Architecture + Design, a small award-winning, full-service architecture and interior design firm based in Hood River / Portland, Oregon. Working on primarily custom residential projects, both new construction and renovations, his work seeks unique, site-responsive design while expressing honesty of materials and simplicity of form. He strives to enhance the lives of his clients through the built environment, connecting them to their surroundings to create their own sense of place. Erik graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, where he studied interior design and architecture. His CV includes work at ZGF Architects and Ankrom Moisan Architects in Portland, Oregon working on a range of building types including cultural, hospitality, commercial, medical, and multi-family residential. He founded EB Architecture in 2015 to focus on custom residential work. Erik is a licensed architect in Washington and Oregon, an AIA member, and NCARB certified.
Flavien Sawadogo is an engineering Team Lead at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in the Campus Design, Engineering and Construction Group. He leads an integrated team of structural, civil engineers and architects to deliver cutting edge facilities and infrastructure to support world class research. Flavien joined the PNNL team in 2021 after spending 14 years in the private sector. He is a licensed architect in two States, a LEED accredited professional, and a PMP professional. He graduated from the University of Idaho with his Master of Architecture in 2007 and went on to work for a fast paced architectural firm in Las Vegas for the next 10 years. He worked on projects in the US and in Saudi Arabia. He moved to the Pacific Northwest 5 years ago before joining PNNL. During that time, he joined the AIA Central Washington Board of Directors and held the presidency in 2020. Flavien has been actively involved in his community and sits on the board of Directors for the Pasco Kennewick Rotary Club and Chairs a joint Rotary International Service committee in the Mid Columbia Basin. He was recognized by the Tri-Cities Business journal with a 2020 young Professional Award.
Steve Mallory, RA, AIA, NCARB, is Principal Architect and Owner of Arculus Design and Technical Services, PLLC, in Kennewick, Washington. Mallory earned a Bachelor of Architecture- Professional, from the University of Idaho, and is a registered architect in Washington State. Mallory has held positions on the AIA Washington Council as a member of the Board of Directors, and Secretary/Treasurer, the AIA Central Washington as a member of the Board of Directors, plus many other professional and community organizations. Mallory has over 37 years of professional experience in architecture and project management. He has extensive experience in industrial, municipal, federal, higher education, medical and dental projects. Mallory’s broad experience base includes master planning, code studies, permitting, estimating, leading large design teams, specifications, project and construction management, value engineering and forensics. Mr. Mallory was previously an associate principal/ branch manager of a 50-person firm in Spokane, WA., senior architect/ project manager at Washington State University and corporate architect at Sverdrup, an extremely large international firm in Kirkland, WA and other firm owner and project manager positions.
