Mar 12 – Form and Detailing of Passive Architecture with Arthur Chukhman and Eric Morrow

Details in architecture can be didactic and express their function through form. In this presentation we will explore how details for high performance/Passive House buildings are unique and can be expressed as architectural forms. We will look at unsuccessful examples and then present a case study of a Net Zero, Urban infill, Passive House in Burlington.

Mar 19 – Net-Zero Retrofit and High Performance Expansion of a 1782 Vermont Farmhouse with Brian Cali

When 20 year old Revolutionary War veteran Moses Chaplin first built the timber frame structure that will be the topic of this talk, achieving net-zero energy and reducing embodied carbon were most certainly not part of the planning. In the 2020s, these goals were front and center during the work to retrofit the original house and expand to allow for single story living and meet other programming goals of the next stewards of this property. Owner Brian Cali will provide an overview of the journey to this project (spoiler alert: Yestermorrow played a key role!), the major design elements, and the process of retrofitting the original building and strategies employed for the addition (which utilized off-site construction).

Mar 26 – Not (Just) Little Boxes: Designing for Performance, Affordability, and Joy with Andy White, Boreal Design and Construction

How do you build a home that meets rigorous energy performance criteria, on a tight budget, that is still functional, comfortable, and exciting? Join Andy White, founder of Boreal Design and Construction, to discuss how an innovative new home in the Mad River Valley addresses this important question. From the schematic design phase through the execution of the build, we will examine the strategies employed in the project, the lessons learned, and how this work can inform future housing development in the region..

Apr 2 – Bringing Mid-Century Modern Homes into the 21st Century with Britton Rogers, Yestermorrow Design/Build School

Britton Rogers will discuss the historic preservation and deep energy retrofit of his mid-century modern home. Britton will present on design considerations for maintaining historic character while incorporating renewable energy systems like solar heat and hot water, passive thermal architecture, and resilient landscape design.

Apr 9 – Affordable Efficiency: Achieving Green Standards on a Budget with Jonathon Goldhammer, Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity

Join Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity for a discussion about energy efficient building in Northwestern Vermont while embracing a perpetually affordable housing mission. Topics in the discussion will range from Net Zero Energy Homes, building to Efficiency Vermont’s Certified 2.0 and 3.0 specifications and passive solar home construction. Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity is building safe, energy-efficient, affordable homes through partnerships, giving families a hand-up (not a handout) to a better life.
