Black River Design Welcomes New Partners
Black River Design Architects is bringing on two new partners to its leadership
team. Polly Wheeler, Architect and Director of Sustainability and Jesse Remick, Architect have
been with Black River Design, Architects (BRD) a combined 53 years. “These two have been
an integral part of BRD’s past success and will surely be an asset to accomplishing our vision
and mission, now and into the future,” said Keith Robinson, one of the firm’s three other
partners.
Polly Wheeler will continue to lead the firm’s sustainability initiatives through the implementation
of the BRD Sustainability Action Plan, in addition to consulting on building envelope design for
many projects. As a senior project manager, she has earned a reputation as being skilled in all
phases of a project from planning to construction administration. Her specialties include
detailing and building science. As Partner, she will continue to serve all client types but takes a
particular interest in pre-K and K-12 school projects. “I really enjoy working with institutions that
benefit the community as a whole. Designing for public schools gives me the opportunity to
help make a difference for kids and collaborate with people who are passionate about
education,” says Wheeler.
Jesse Remick has been with the firm since 2000 but grew up on BRD project job sites while
shadowing his father, a mechanical and plumbing contractor from St. Johnsbury. These real-
world experiences, together with his training at Vermont Technical College (AAS Arch 2000),
and his years at BRD, have made Jesse a pragmatic designer as well as a highly effective
people and project manager. Jesse believes that, “The success of any project hinges on
recognizing what each team player is good at, clearly defining and communicating their roles,
and equipping them with the information, tools, feedback, and encouragement necessary to
bring the client’s vision to fruition.”
Jesse works on projects of all sizes, scopes, and client types. His flexibility, willingness, and
capabilities allow him to effortlessly jump in and lend a hand when needed. BRD is an award winning, full service, architecture firm located in Montpelier, VT. Our vision is to leave a lasting positive impact on people and the planet through the practice of architecture.
Birdseye is excited to announce they have been invited back to Venice, Italy by the
European Cultural Centre (ECC) to take part in their “Time Space Existence” Biennial
Architecture Exhibition during the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. Birdseye’s work,
“Untitled,” was previously featured at ECC’s “Personal Structures” Art Exhibition in 2024 and
will be on view again this year in Palazzo Mora, Venice, Italy from May 10 th to November
23rd , 2025.
Birdseye is honored to have been selected for the Forbes List of America’s Top 200 Residential Architects. Birdseye underwent an extensive vetting process by Forbes as they
sought to determine the country’s best residential architects. Forbes says: “Birdseye’s
projects boast clear concepts and confident execution, enhanced by an artisan’s skill with
wood (a couple of homes are covered with lattice, including the windows). Their approach is
unabashedly contemporary, but with an occasional nod to the past (A-frames, anyone?) that
never descends into kitsch.”
Birdseye is thrilled to have received a 2024 Merit Award from the New England Architecture Awards, conferred by the AIA New England Components, for Annex. The jury commented
that Annex “harmoniously combines agrarian influences with the dynamic, flowing form of
Richard Erdman’s sculptures, creating an engaging and memorable space. Annex achieves a
remarkable balance by asserting its own distinctive architectural identity while serving as a
compelling backdrop for the artist’s work.”
R. Edwards & Co. is excited to announce it has relocated its office to 52 State St. in Montpelier.
